Devices such as plug-in batteries and those storing electricity imported from household circuits are excluded from these rules.

This legal update modifies the Plugs and Sockets Safety Regulations 1994 and the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002. The statutory instrument was submitted to UK Parliament on July 17, just a day after ministers approved it. The amendment introduces a narrow exception to existing restrictions on generating equipment plugs, requiring that each plug be certified by a notified body to meet BS 1363 standards. While product approval applies across the UK, the electricity safety amendment covers England, Wales, and Scotland.
The interim specifications establish criteria for electrical design, mounting methods, fire safety, labeling, and user instructions. A technical evaluation tested representative plug-in solar units on household wiring under controlled settings, demonstrating stable operation and no sustained unsafe energization or thermal risks. The study also identified differences regarding export controls, electromagnetic compatibility, and overall product quality. These findings contributed to the development of the UK-specific safety standard required for legal market entry.
Retailers prepare for the launch of certified products
A government consultation process attracted 466 responses from businesses, specialists, regulators, and members of the public. Over 85% of respondents supported the interim specifications, with many also endorsing the plug regulation changes. Participants included manufacturers, installers, network operators, electricians, academics, and consumer groups. Concerns raised involved older household wiring, non-compliant online products, and the importance of clear instructions. Several urged authorities to differentiate plug-in solar panels from plug-in battery systems.
Major retailers like B&Q, Currys, Amazon, and Lidl have begun preparing for the new category of approved products. This connection method addresses households unable to install traditional rooftop systems, including some renters and those with balconies or outdoor areas. Systems employing the new plug-in approach are not legally operational before August 27. From that date onward, only approved products within the 800-watt limit may connect through standard household sockets. The total solar capacity recorded in June does not include systems utilizing the new plug-in framework.
