LONDON / RankWire.AI / – Britain is strengthening its defenses against advanced artificial intelligence threats after trials uncovered more than 1,300 cyber vulnerabilities. These weaknesses were identified across hundreds of government software repositories. The British authorities stated that their initiative will leverage cutting-edge AI tools to enhance cybersecurity and pinpoint flaws within vital digital infrastructure. They are also developing strategies to handle serious incidents involving autonomous AI systems. This effort is part of a broader initiative aimed at boosting national resilience as more sophisticated AI models become available to the public.

In two government-led pilots, a total of 1,352 vulnerabilities were identified and remediated across 548 code repositories in 18 departments. The tests aimed to evaluate how advanced AI could assist in locating software flaws and recognizing potential cyber threats. Moving forward, officials intend to expand the frontier AI hardening programme to other government sectors, concentrating on systems with the highest risk levels. The initiative also seeks to enhance government-wide capabilities for utilizing AI in cyber defense while ensuring oversight of the technology remains robust.
Britain’s AI Security Institute is currently reviewing advanced AI models and testing the effectiveness of their protective measures. Artificial Intelligence Minister Kanishka Narayan announced that the institute employs over 100 technical experts focused on model evaluation and security assessments. Its ongoing work includes testing Gemini 4 Argon and other state-of-the-art systems. The government emphasizes the importance of independent testing, asserting that public authorities cannot solely depend on AI developers to evaluate risks posed by increasingly capable models.
Expansion of AI incident preparedness
The National Cyber Security Centre is collaborating with government agencies and the AI Security Institute to establish procedures for managing major incidents involving agentic AI. These systems can perform complex tasks with minimal human oversight. The proposed framework will serve as a guide for authorities to identify incidents, contain risks, and support those affected. Additionally, officials are exploring how existing cyber response structures can address failures involving autonomous AI and other advanced technologies across critical services.
The government is also considering amendments to the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill currently progressing through Parliament. Proposed measures include strengthening the handling of AI-related cyber risks, serious incidents, near misses, and loss-of-control scenarios. Existing proposals mandate certain regulated operators and digital service providers to report significant cyber events. Operators would be required to submit initial notifications within 24 hours and comprehensive reports within 72 hours. This expanded security framework covers essential services such as hospitals, energy grids, and drinking-water systems.
Britain enhances safeguards for AI technologies
Narayan highlighted that Britain must integrate stronger cyber defenses with independent testing and domestic technical capabilities. He also indicated that legislation might be necessary where current safeguards are insufficient to address emerging risks. The government has begun developing support measures for AI verification and intends to release more information in the upcoming months. Officials believe that verification tools are vital for confirming whether advanced systems behave as intended and for ensuring safety controls remain effective under challenging conditions.
These initiatives are part of a comprehensive government programme examining the national security and public service implications of artificial intelligence. The Prime Minister’s AI Taskforce is reviewing issues related to economic growth, public services, the workforce, and security. Additionally, Britain has identified AI as a key policy focus for its 2027 G20 presidency. The latest cybersecurity strategies focus on testing advanced AI models, patching software vulnerabilities, and preparing government infrastructure for serious AI-related incidents.
